Which wounds need professional dressing?

Some wounds heal well with a plaster from the pharmacy. Others need proper cleaning and a sterile dressing to close without trouble — and in Pattaya’s warm, humid climate, the line between the two is thinner than most visitors expect. Road rash from a motorbike slip is the classic example: gravel and dirt get ground into the skin, and unless every fragment is flushed out, the graze can become infected within a day or two. Exhaust-pipe burns, cuts from glass or coral, deep blisters, and skin tears in older travellers all fall into the same category.

A wound also needs professional attention if it was caused by an animal. Wounds that are already red, swollen, warm, or weeping may have developed cellulitis, a skin infection that should be assessed by a doctor rather than covered and hoped for the best. What happens when you walk in

Your visit starts with an examination. The doctor checks how deep the wound is, whether anything is left inside it, and whether the edges will close on their own. The wound is then cleaned and irrigated with sterile solution, and any dirt, gravel, or dead tissue is gently removed — the single most important step in preventing infection. We then choose a dressing that matches the wound: non-stick layers for grazes and burns, absorbent pads for weeping wounds, and secure waterproof cover where practical. Before you leave, the doctor will ask about your tetanus vaccination history, explain how to look after the dressing, and set a clear schedule for changes — typically every one to three days depending on the wound. Healing in a tropical climate — and when to seek urgent care

Heat, sweat, sea water, and swimming pools all work against an open wound. Keep the dressing dry, avoid swimming until the skin has closed, and do not let a damp dressing stay on overnight — moisture trapped against broken skin is the fastest route to infection in this climate. If a dressing gets soaked or slips off, walk in and we will replace it; there is no need to wait for your scheduled change.

Seek care straight away — at any hour — if bleeding does not stop after ten minutes of firm pressure, if the wound is deep or gaping, if it involves the face, hands, or a joint, or if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, red streaks running from the wound, or fever. Can you treat a wound that is already infected?

Will I need a tetanus booster for my wound?

Possibly. The doctor will ask when you last had a tetanus vaccination and look at how the wound happened. Dirty wounds, deep punctures, and animal-related wounds carry a higher tetanus risk, and a booster can be given at the clinic during the same visit if you need one.

Can I swim in the sea or pool with a dressed wound?

It is best not to. Sea water and pool water both introduce bacteria, and a soaked dressing loses its protective barrier. Wait until the skin has fully closed before swimming. If your dressing does get wet, come in and we will replace it with a fresh one.

Do you change dressings after surgery done at another clinic or hospital?
