What urgent care covers — and when a hospital is safer

Urgent care sits between a routine doctor’s visit and a hospital emergency room. It covers problems that need attention today, often within hours, but that do not put your life in immediate danger. At our clinic that includes cuts that may need stitches, sprains from motorbike falls, high fevers, ear and throat infections, urinary infections, food poisoning and dehydration, animal bites, jellyfish stings, minor burns, and mild allergic reactions that are not affecting your breathing. Some situations are beyond what any clinic should manage. Go straight to a hospital emergency department — or call the 1669 national emergency line — for chest pain or pressure, signs of a stroke such as facial drooping, arm weakness, or slurred speech, severe difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding that will not stop, a serious head injury with confusion or vomiting, or any loss of consciousness. If you arrive with one of these, we will stabilise you and arrange transfer, but a hospital is the right first stop.

What happens when you walk in

You do not need an appointment, a referral, or any paperwork in advance. A nurse checks your vital signs first, so the doctor knows straight away whether anything serious is developing. The doctor then examines you, explains in plain English what they believe is going on, and agrees the plan with you before treatment begins.

Most urgent visits can be completed on site: wound cleaning and suturing, tetanus and rabies vaccination after animal bites, rapid blood and urine testing, medication dispensed from the in-house pharmacy, and IV fluid therapy when vomiting, diarrhoea, or heat have left you dehydrated. Straightforward visits are usually finished within an hour.
