What is bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis, usually shortened to BV, is the most common cause of unusual vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age. It develops when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina shifts: the protective lactobacilli that normally keep the environment slightly acidic fall in number, and other bacteria multiply in their place. BV is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about — it can affect anyone, whether or not they are sexually active.
