What a sinus infection feels like — and why it happens

Your sinuses are air-filled spaces behind the cheeks, forehead and nose. When their lining becomes inflamed — most often on the back of a cold or the flu — mucus gets trapped, pressure builds and infection can follow. The typical picture is a blocked nose with thick yellow or green discharge, facial pain or fullness that worsens when you bend forward, a dulled sense of smell, and sometimes a cough or aching in the upper teeth.

Most sinus infections in adults are viral and settle as the cold that triggered them runs its course. A smaller number become bacterial — more likely when symptoms drag on past ten days, improve and then suddenly worsen, or arrive with marked fever and intense one-sided facial pain. Ongoing allergies can set the stage too: allergic swelling narrows the sinus openings and stops them draining properly.

Because the nose, ears and throat are connected, sinus trouble rarely stays in one place. Post-nasal drip can leave you with a raw throat, and blocked passages can push pressure toward the ears — an ear infection can develop from the same cause and is checked in the same visit.

What happens when you walk in

For viral infections the focus is genuine symptom relief: saline rinses, medication to ease congestion and inflammation, and clear advice on what to expect over the coming days. Antibiotics are prescribed only when the examination points to a bacterial infection; they do nothing for viral sinusitis and we will tell you so plainly. When to seek urgent care — and a note for travellers

A small number of sinus infections spread beyond the sinuses, and those need prompt attention. Come straight to the clinic — day or night — if you notice swelling or redness around an eye, double or blurred vision, a severe headache unlike your usual ones, a stiff neck, confusion or drowsiness, or a high fever that will not settle.

One practical point for travellers: flying or scuba diving with blocked sinuses can be painful and occasionally harmful, because trapped air cannot equalise as pressure changes. If you have a flight or dive trip planned, come in early rather than waiting for the congestion to clear.
