Why ear infections are so common in Pattaya

There are two main types, and Pattaya’s climate encourages both. A middle ear infection (otitis media) develops behind the eardrum and usually follows a cold, the flu, or a sinus infection. Congestion blocks the tube that drains the middle ear, fluid builds up, and germs multiply in it. It is especially common in children, but adults get it too — often just as a respiratory illness seems to be improving.

An outer ear infection (otitis externa) affects the ear canal itself and is strongly linked to water: daily swimming, humid air, and earbuds that trap moisture soften the skin of the canal and let bacteria in, which is why it is nicknamed swimmer’s ear. Symptoms of the two types overlap — aching or sharp pain, fullness or pressure, muffled hearing, sometimes fever or discharge. How we diagnose and treat ear infections at the clinic

Walk in and a doctor will take a short history — when the pain started, whether you have been swimming, any recent colds or flights — then examine both ears with an otoscope. An inflamed, swollen canal points to an outer ear infection; a red or bulging eardrum with fluid behind it points to a middle ear infection. The distinction matters, because the treatments are not the same.

Treatment may include pain relief, antibiotic ear drops for bacterial outer ear infections, oral antibiotics when a middle ear infection is clearly bacterial or failing to settle, and gentle cleaning of a blocked ear canal. We do not hand out antibiotics automatically: many mild middle ear infections are viral and settle on their own, and the doctor will tell you honestly when watchful waiting plus pain relief is the better plan.
